SEO for lawyers that respects Rule 36.
Legal marketing in Australia runs inside real rules - and the firms ranking today are mostly ignoring an open goal we found in the search results. Here is the compliant playbook.
Two facts from our August 2026 research set up the whole opportunity. First: “SEO for lawyers” and its cluster showed fifteen distinct 100–1K search terms off one seed, real, repeated demand. Second: for some of the highest-intent phrases, the top organic result was a Reddit thread. When a forum post outranks every law firm in the country for a commercial term, the profession has left the door open.
The rules first, because they shape everything
Under the Legal Profession Uniform Law regime (NSW, VIC, WA), advertising must not be false, misleading or deceptive, and Rule 36 of the Solicitors’ Conduct Rules restricts claiming to be a “specialist” or using “expert” framing unless you hold the relevant accreditation. Practical consequences for SEO:
- Write “family lawyer in Geelong” or “practises in family law”, not “Geelong’s leading family law specialists” (unless accredited, in which case say exactly that).
- Case results and testimonials need care, some jurisdictions restrict them further, particularly for personal injury.
- Every claim on a page should survive a regulator reading it. This is a writing discipline, not a handicap.
The pages that actually produce matters
Legal search divides into matter intent (“family lawyer geelong”, “unfair dismissal claim”) and question intent (“how long does probate take in victoria”). The playbook is one page per matter type per location for the first, and genuinely useful answer content for the second, written by someone who can read the legislation, structured so a machine can quote it. Question pages rarely convert directly; they build the authority that makes the matter pages rank. Skip either half and the engine stalls.
Why the Reddit finding matters to you
Google is ranking forum threads because law firm content is thin, generic and interchangeable, the same “we are a full-service firm” paragraph on a thousand sites. A firm that publishes specific, plainly written, compliant answers, with a real lawyer’s name on them, beats that field. Authority signals (the author’s admission year, practice areas, professional memberships) now also feed AI assistants deciding which source to quote. E-E-A-T is not jargon here; for legal content it is the ranking system working as designed.

Questions owners ask
Can law firms use Google Ads too?
Yes, within the same advertising rules. Ads suit urgent matter types - criminal, family, employment - where the search happens once and the decision is fast. SEO carries the research-heavy matters.
Is legal SEO slower than other industries?
Somewhat - legal is competitive and trust-heavy, so authority takes quarters, not weeks. The compensation is value per matter: one signed family or commercial matter typically pays for months of the work.
Who should write the content?
Drafting can be shared; accountability cannot. A practising lawyer signs off every page, claims are verified against the rules, and the author byline is real. That is both compliance and - increasingly - how ranking works.
